The words Black and Friday never used to be associated with each other here in South Africa until only a few years ago. Now, the two words together are synonymous with massive savings from retailers, both online and in store, across the country.
But just where did the phenomenon of Black Friday begin and what does it actually mean? Let’s take a look now
What is Black Friday?
Since the early 1950’s, Black Friday has been the name given to the day after Thanksgiving, which always falls on the fourth Friday in November. This day in America, signalled the beginning of the Christmas festive and shopping season and retailers began to offer excellent specials and deals to kick off the season.
What is Black Friday in South Africa?
South Africa adopted the concept of Black Friday a few years ago, and even though it is not linked to the Thanksgiving holiday (because we do not celebrate that day in SA) it has become known as a day on which retailers and other sales services offer massive savings and special offers. It is celebrated on the fourth Friday in November as well.
How to practice a safe Black Friday during COVID-19?
Many consumers are very aware that this year, the COVID-19 pandemic has put a slight damper on Black Friday because of the worry of congregating in large numbers and the potential spread of the disease, especially when people are not practicing social distancing or mask wearing.
The safest bet for Black Friday in 2020, in our opinion, is to shop online when and where possible. Make sure of retailers that have online platforms on which you can shop from the comfort of home. If you do not have access to a computer or you absolutely have to visit a retailer in person this Black Friday, make use of these safe and hygiene COVID-19 precautions:
- Wear your mask at all time
- Carry a hand sanitizer with you and use regularly during your shop
- Practice social distancing during your shopping and stay at least 1.5m away from other customers.
- If you are feeling unwell, feverish or have any other Coronavirus symptoms, do not go out in public at all but rather self-isolate at home. Perhaps ask a family member, friend or neighbour to shop for the Black Friday specials you need on your behalf.
